Hi, thanks for getting in touch with your question. A woman has a cycle of fertility she goes through every month, which usually repeats every 28 days. If you and your wife want to best estimate when she is most able to conceive (get pregnant), it is usually 14 days after the first day of her last period (menstrual cycle, monthly bleed). That is a general statement, there are some factors that can vary. If a woman's periods are irregular, it can be harder to figure out when she is most fertile. Also, the birth control she has used in the past may effect early attempts at pregnancy. There are some indicators that a woman's body is getting ready to release an egg, which usually mean there is a good chance to get pregnant: breast tenderness, bloating, mild abdominal pain and increased sex drive (libido). Also, there can be an increase in vaginal discharge, and it will be clear, slippery and mucus-like/stretchy. This change in discharge makes the vagina a better environment for the sperm and helps it travel to impregnate the egg. Also, if a woman takes her temperature every day, over the month, the day in which she is ovulating should see her temperature raise slightly. In order to use her temperature to help, a woman must chart her temperature reading every day. We hope this information has been helpful.
