I'm a bit of a hypochondriac as it is...

Hi, so my girlfriend and I are talking about trying anal, both ways. I didn't want her to do it to me and not be prepared for what it would feel like, so I got a condom on my finger and had a poke around myself, and I need to ask someone what kind of texture should I expect to feel up there? Because I found mostly smooth and soft as expected but if I reach up and back slightly I can feel a almost hard what what feels like lumpy texture. Now I have no idea what this is and naturally my worrier brain jumped straight to the worst conclusion; so what should it feel like? To calm myself down I've been wondering if it's excriment or some part of a bone. Any words of advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Response from Men's Sexual Health:

It is always good to get to know your body – that way you can tell if something changes, which might be a reason to ask for medical help.

From what you say, you have found a hard lump at the back of your rectum (the bit of bowel tube going up inside from your anus). This is roughly where you might expect to feel the coccyx – the lowest bony tip of the spine. It is (obviously) on the outside of your rectum, so it will feel slightly soft through the fleshy wall of the tube. It cannot move around when you touch it. If the lump you are feeling is excrement (shit) this is never attached to anything and your finger should be able to move round all sides of it without a problem.

If what you feel fits this description, you probably don’t need to worry or do anything, it is normal. If however what you feel is soft but attached to you and can be moved around, you ought to get it checked.

Just for the record, we guys have a prostate gland which your finger may be able to find if you reach up and forwards. This is like a rubbery golf ball with a groove down the middle. Many guys get an erotic feeling when it is pressed or stroked although some find it unpleasant. Women do not have a prostate gland, but the erotic feeling that many of them experience with anal sex is because the nerves that supply their clitoris are often shared with some of those in the anal area.
